How to motivate Employees?

If ever I will be having my company someday, I will really apply these principles and learning’s in this topic named “How to Motivate Employees” that I’ve learned in this organization analysis subject. And put it into action the good mannerism of a boss towards motivating the employees. But the question is how?

Performance of an employee depends on the ability, motivation and resources. If I’m going to relate it to the status of my career, I can say that I have the ability, the motivation and the 75% resources- in the school. I have my own resources when it comes to teaching and references but those needed technology ( example the projector in the IT Room) upgrades (on the higher specification of computers; higher processor and RAM) or equipments in the computer laboratory, wherein I can innovate more my teachings in the world of information technology to my students, it’s not 100%. But still, I create some innovative ways of inputs and outputs, also strategies and instructions that would somehow relate to the course subject. Still, a better alternative solution.

We, teachers, give recognition, appreciation and good grades to our excellent and responsible students, and also motivate those fair or struggling students who were somehow needed to strive more and give their best in the class. They would somehow be happy that their output is appreciated and noticed by us, teachers. But when it comes to the administration in my organization, I can say that they were poor in other facet of motivating employees. First on us employees, practically speaking, we were motivated to work because of our salary. High compensation of salary denotes greater motivation in work.  But my basic salary is just a small amount compared to other schools. Other people said that my salary is just for singles only. Yes, I’m fortunate that I’m still single. But in my own opinion, I didn’t come here just only for a salary but for a stable work experience. Somehow, someday I will find some greener pasture but for now, I am happy with my students and my working environment, which includes my co-teachers J, even if the administration had the negative rules and procedures but still I have no choice but to understand the procedures because they were the one who’s giving me my basic salary. J hehe.

Between theory X and theory Y., I can say that I’m in Theory Y. It’s because I considered myself as ambitious employee that I envision my students to graduate in the field of Information Technology armored with the knowledge and capabilities as an IT graduate. But students learning in the field of IT should not be limited from the teaching of the instructors; they should explore and strive on their own to learn because spoon feeding is not rampant anymore in college. So it’s very challenging on my part as an instructor because we teachers (in the computer studies discipline), as the main source of knowledge to engaging the student in all facets of the digital life. But also the difficult task of being a teacher is we give all our best to teach, but still it wasn’t enough. Commitment itself is a reward, yes teaching is a commitment. I have to prepare for my subjects, the strategies and instructions in my teaching, and also I have to wake up early in the morning, because I’m committed to teach and be an inspiration also to my students. My imagination and creativity put to use. Yes, I am proud to say that when it come to inputs and outputs in my teaching, I research and think for a unique idea on instructions and strategies that would relate to my subject preparations in school. Thanks to God, it really runs through my veins, that He has given me this imaginative and creative mind that I really use on my teaching profession, so for my students not to be bored and also had the interest on my subject.  When I was first hired, I seek more responsibilities, for me to be trained on my teaching profession and also gained some added learning’s. That’s why I accepted the responsibilities and assigned task that were given by my program head. Yes, I received complements and appreciations from the program heads. Last year, the past and current Dean had appreciated my way of teaching as they conducted an observation in my class. Well, all of these were considered as a way of motivating me as an employee.

Currently, I have my work as an instructor with 10 preparations; all of these were major subjects in information technology. But there were also an outside tasks that aside from being an instructor that was assigned for me to do. I’d come into realization, that it’s not very easy on my part because some of the subjects were it’s my first time to handle or teach. So it takes a lot of preparations and studying. And also I have my 3 subjects in post graduate class that I have also to prioritize.  Due to circumstances, I decline on the proposal of the OSA-Director that I would be the moderator in WATCH club in our academe. I will not pressure myself too much because being a moderator will add more responsibility and work, and I have to choose my 10 preparations and post graduate to be prioritize because the course subjects in IT are not just as easy as ABCD. So I have to give my priority on my teaching preparations and post graduate. It’s a good realization and decision for me because you cannot serve two masters at the same time. And I’m also been afraid that I have been so workaholic that my health would be affected, I always put into my mind that being a workaholic is not bad as long as you didn’t leave your health in negligence because “Health is Wealth”, time for myself to be relaxed, also you should have time to your family and most importantly to God.

What Motivates Employee To Stay? These were the great motivators, full appreciation for job well done, be part of decisions, open communications, interesting and meaningful work and good relationships at work. All of these are at a process in my professional career wherein I belong to this organization. I received full appreciation for a job well done, mostly not from the administration but from the program heads from different programs. I have been part of the decisions every time we will be having our faculty meeting and decisions also especially other concerns for BSIT programs. Open communications with my co-employees at work. An interesting and meaningful work because teaching is the noblest profession of all. I didn’t expect that I will be in this teaching profession because I didn’t graduate for an education degree course, or earned any education units. But because IT educators-privileged educators were so in demand nowadays, I entered this kind of profession considering that I’m an IT graduate but totally stranger in teaching strategies. But because also of experiences and advises that my mentors had given me, I should come into realization that I should be committed in this kind of profession because I choose this profession and teaching creates other professions. Good relationships at work because we share the same sentiments, hehe. I feel the warmth of welcome and sense of being “belong” and I considered my organization as my second family. Even if there were some “kontrabida” but I didn’t mind the supporting actors and actresses because I’m working for my students and not for them. And this is what I’m paid for. Not to mind or entertain their poor weaknesses.. hehe..I have so much to think and they are not included in my thinking. Indeed, a waste of time. I have to understand that every organization is like a movie, there were “bida’s” and “kontrabida’s “but nonetheless, majority of my co-workers are also “bida” like me. So I’m indeed happy with my organization.

So what motivates me to stay? First is, I’m committed with my profession as a teacher and I do have a stable work. My family is also happy for me that I’m not unemployed, I have this job that fits into the course I graduated in college that is the BSIT course and my teaching profession fits into my character as a witty and humorous  one. J Hehe...Second, for now I’m contented with my small amount of salary. Third one, I feel the sense of happiness with my profession- with the working environment and with my students. There were also “high blood mood” sometimes because of the students that needs to be disciplined but its part of my teaching career. There were challenging tasks but above all I inspire, mold and educate young minds in the field of information technology.
